The allure of succulents is for all ages. There are so many ways to use them indoors or out and they come in many shapes, sizes, colors, and textures. They don’t need a lot of maintenance and can tolerate a certain amount of neglect. They can be combined in living wreaths, terrariums, fairy gardens and even wedding bouquets. A recent bride used them for the wedding dinner centerpieces. They were placed in small glass bowls with floral netting. Votive candles in pastel colors surrounded the bowls.
Succulents also look great on a patio or deck. Use any kind of outdoor pot or container as long as it has a drainage hole. Don’t water often! Let them dry before you water again. Succulents do well as houseplants if they have a bright south or west-facing window. Bring succulents indoors when the temps get in the low 40’s at night.
I’ve heard that some doctors are prescribing gardening for patients with cancer and mental health problems. This has proven to reduce patients’ need to see a doctor, enhance wellbeing and promote better sleep. In London, a group of nurses, doctors and patients have been growing vegetables and selling the harvest to the hospital. The garden has produced less depression, anxiety, stress, and reconnects patients with past interests. Very therapeutic!!
