I know. You’ve heard it before. Just hear me out – give a raised bed garden a chance. If you want better soil, fewer weeds and an end to gardening backaches, a raised bed garden could be a great solution this spring.
Raised bed gardens are a great landscaping technique, and provide better drainage and less weeds. They can also be installed on top of soil or concrete, making them ideal for apartment or townhome dwellers lacking ground space. If you’re thinking about going the concrete route, be sure to choose a one or two foot high border to provide plenty of room for soil and drainage.
For any raised bed, your width should be at least 18” to two feet or wider, or as long as you can still reach into the center to tend the plants. Similar to container gardening, use the best type of soil mix to fit the diet of the plants to be grown.
You can construct your sides out of cedar timbers, concrete block, or landscape blocks. Try a raised bed in your garden this season, and experience what a huge difference it can make in the health and maintenance of your plants. If you have any questions, just ask us!
Warm wishes,
-Nola
P.S. In the meantime, when you’re shoveling snow this winter (whenever we get any, that is) spray your shovel with nonstick cooking spray and the white stuff will slide off easier!
