In a recent publication, there was an article about edible flowers. There is a good chance you have some growing in your garden and you may not be aware of their possibilities. But there are some you may not want to chew – always check to make sure it’s safe before eating. Never eat flowers if you have applied herbicides or pesticides recently. Fertilizer may change the flavor, so apply at least
two weeks before harvesting. It’s best to harvest the edible blooms after the dew is gone, but before the heat of the day.
Edible Flowers to Pick:
- Tulips and Pansies are the first in the spring. Eat the flower petals only, but you may have competition from rabbits and squirrels!
- Day lilies are another choice. The flowers are great in salads or stuffed with cream cheese and herb mixture and fried.
- The flowers and leaves of nasturtium have a peppery flavor and are great in salads and as a garnish on soups.
- Squash blossoms are versatile and may also be stuffed with a cream cheese mixture. They can also be dipped in batter and fried. Sounds like a great hor d’oeuvre and a real conversation piece.
- The blossoms of herbs are also edible as well as the leaves. Each tiny flower will have a sweet taste and a hint of the herbs flavor.
Another way to enjoy your garden!
