Is this the year you are going to start fall clean up in the garden instead of waiting until spring? It may not sound so great now, but it will truly give you a head start in the spring. Mostly, it is cleaning
up all the vegetation, blooms and the vegetable garden you have enjoyed all summer. Cleaning out the garden now will help prevent disease problems next year.
You can leave the roses alone and in the spring prune back to the green stems, but do provide winter cover for the hybrid teas and floribundas. Keep the lawn, trees, and shrubs watered as well until frost. This will help them survive through the winter months. Harvest your herbs and preserve in ice cube trays or dry in the microwave on paper towels. A mint leaf frozen in a cube tray tastes so good when you plop it into your lemon water or mint julep!
Visit the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum to view the many colors of fall. It is a place of discovery and learning for all ages and can be a fun activity for families. Check their website for all the many events or just tour at your own leisure. You will be glad you did!
