Hummingbirds – they are so amazing and a wonder to watch. Their wings beat up to 50 times a second and they take 150 breaths a minute. Don’t try to match that! Their eggs are about the size of a jellybean and they use moss to make their nests. You may notice they can fly backwards too.
Plants that will help attract hummingbirds:
Blue delphinium and trumpet vine give them a source of nectar. You’ll need a good trellis for the trumpet vine!- Old-fashioned Bee Balm (monarda) is recommended too.
- Here’s a surprise! Mix black and red petunia in a hanging basket and that will be a showstopper, as well as attract the little beauties.
- Purple salvia is a favorite and so are coral bells.
- For a shrub, chose viburnum for spring flowers, colorful fall foliage and berries.
Helpful feeder hints:
- Keep your sugar-water full.
- Offer more than one feeder. (Some male birds will “hog” a feeder).
- Keep those feeders clean!
