Are you looking for an idea to keep the kids busy this summer? Help them create and plant a butterfly garden either in a container or a special garden. They can learn a lot about how a butterfly develops and what they like to eat. There are lots of articles, books and online information on what can be done to attract butterflies. Even kids who live in condos or apartments can plant a container to attract the monarchs. Monarchs like verbena, zinnia, black-eyed Susan, lantana and perennials such as lupines, daylilies, and columbine. They also like sunflowers and what youngster doesn’t love sunflowers?
At Wagners we have FREE packets of milkweed seed for the monarchs. So, stop by and grab a packet for your yard.
Remember to raise the blade on your lawn mower during the summer months. Longer grass shades the ground which keeps the soil cooler, which in turn helps retain moisture.
Your container gardens will need regular moisture and fertilizer too as well as the vegetable and flower gardens. Enjoy the flower and fauna of your garden all season!
