Here is a new idea that maybe you hadn’t thought about. Pair alyssum with lettuce! Why? New research by USDA Agricultural Research Service has discovered that alyssum helps to control pest problems when planted near lettuce. It’s particularly effective to control aphids. Alyssum attracts a beneficial insect, the hoverfly. They lay eggs nearby, once hatched they scurry over to the lettuce and prey on the aphids. Another benefit is that the alyssum produces more flower heads when near the lettuce. This was observed on the vegetable farms in California. Now isn’t that a great surprise? Alyssum also makes what an attractive border in your garden. Learn more about this flower power.
