Hardy Fall Mums
Our fall mums for sale are available in many colors. Fall garden mums add spice to your home when summer plants are calling it quits.
You can plant perennial mums any time after the last frost (around the middle of May). Look for hardy varieties called MN mums or Mammoth mums, since all mums are perennials but not all are hardy for MN. Plant them at the same soil level that they had in their container in full sun to light shade and in well-drained soil. When mums are planted early, they will need to be pinched back (removing the top half or so of the growing tip) every two weeks until the 4th of July for compact and multi-bloom plants. Mums can also be planted during summer, but in MN, to create a well-established plant before winter, the earlier in the season they get in the ground the better.
The newly developed by U of MN “Mammoth” Mums have proven for the last few years to over-winter well, even if planted in the fall. They are a Zone 3B daisy mum and don’t require pinching or pruning. They form a 2.5ft tall and 4ft wide mound, so make sure to leave enough room around them at planting.
Maintenance Tips
If needed, divide the plants in the spring, just as new shoots appear for plants like the mums that flower later in the season. Just dig the plant out with as much soil as possible, cut through the roots and the soil and plant the new plants into another area.
Non-hardy Fall Mums
Mums that are purchased in the fall in containers should be placed in full sun to light shade. They should be watered as needed as with other pots. Most varieties sold in the fall are not hardy for MN. They are bred for fall color and the large number of blossoms. Mums are usually used as a fall color decoration for steps, patios and gardens and disposed after done flowering. They are a perfect replacement for the tired summer annuals, because of their cold tolerance and long lasting blooms.
Ornamental Kale
Ornamental Kale is a cold-loving plant that thrives in cool, moist, sunny locations. The fringed foliage will be more vivid and attractive in cool weather. Planting kale with ornamental grasses or fall mums can soften their stiff, formal appearance. Use the foliage with fresh cut flowers for a unique arrangement. These plants serve as butterfly nectar sources and as hosts for butterfly larvae.
Pansies & Violas
Pansies and Violas are our most frost tolerant annuals. They will survive in temperatures as low as -15F. Plant your pansies in full sun to part shade and rich, well-drained soil. For better blooms, use a water-soluble fertilizer like Miracle-Gro (available at Wagners). Encourage longer blooming by deadheading (removing the spent blooms). Violas are the small-faced members of the family. They may be more compact, but they like to be treated the same as pansies. Both Pansies and Violas are perfect in containers. Wagners offers colorful 4¼” pots to beautify your garden or fall planters.
We also carry many varieties of Ornamental Pepper plants, Millet and other Ornamental Grasses (to name a few). Stop at our Minneapolis location to see our huge selection of mums, kale and other fall loving plants or go to our online store for current fall plant availability.
